A Gentle, Modern Way to Treat Gum Infections – Introducing GBT
We are excited to offer a cutting-edge alternative to the traditional scale and polish: Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). This is a gentle, effective, and comfortable way to remove the plaque that causes gum infection and tooth decay, all in just 30 minutes.
Unlike most traditional cleanings, GBT at our practice is performed by me, not a hygienist.
This means you benefit from:
- Specialist care from a qualified medical professional
- The added benefit of a professional teeth examination at the same time, at no additional cost (NB: this does not negate a full mouth checkup including screening x-ray imaging)
GBT is delivered using the Swiss-engineered EMS Airflow®️ machine, which uses a superfine erythritol powder in a warm, high-pressure spray to remove biofilm from all accessible tooth surfaces. This advanced technique eliminates the scraping and discomfort often associated with conventional cleanings.
Why Choose GBT?
- Gentle & Painless: No scraping. Just a soft, high-tech spray that makes cleaning teeth more comfortable than ever.
- Thorough & Targeted: A special dye highlights harmful biofilm, allowing it to be completely removed — even from hard-to-reach areas.
- Health-Boosting: Removing biofilm supports the return of healthy bacteria, reduces inflammation, prevents bone loss, and strengthens the attachment of gum to teeth.
- Whole-Body Benefits: Healthy gums help reduce the risk of systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s by preventing inflammatory toxins from entering your bloodstream.
Why is healthy gum important?
- Healthy gum tissue, much like skin, forms a protective barrier between your mouth and the rest of your body. When the gums become inflamed, this barrier weakens, allowing bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream. These harmful substances can travel throughout the body, contributing to systemic inflammation and increasing the risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
How Often Should You Book GBT?
- Every 6 months: For children (5+) and most adults.
- Every 4 months: If you’ve been diagnosed with periodontal disease, have crowns or implants, or are over 70.
- Every 3 months: If you wear braces or are over 80.
Why Apply Fluoride After GBT?
Once the biofilm has been removed, professionally applied fluoride becomes more effective.
It: Strengthens teeth against decay by penetrating enamel and forming a protective barrier against acid-producing bacteria
- It is especially beneficial for:
- Children and young adults
- Patients experiencing dry mouth (often due to medication)
- Those with gum recession (common in adults)
- People wearing braces
- Patients who have received head or neck radiation
- Elderly people who have exposed tooth roots, dry mouth and loss of dexterity
- Sensitive teeth
- Referral.
Referrals are all welcome. Please refer family and friends who will benefit from having GBT. Gum diseases are in the top 3 most common medical conditions and just about everyone I see, has undiagnosed inflammation of the gingiva (skin that frames the teeth).
